About Växjö
Welcome to Växjö – a green expansive city with a renowned environmental policy and a growth rate comparable to Sweden's major cities.
Growth & accommodation
Up to the year 2030 Växjö is expecting to accommodate 30 000 new inhabitants. There are currently large-scale plans to construct all forms of accommodation in the city from houses to privately and council-owned apartments.
The city's business environment is rich and diverse with some 8000 businesses in a dynamic mix of size and sectors. We have approximately 600 businesses within the IT sector that expect to employ some 700 people over the next few years.
Shopping & Culture
The city can offer you some great shopping with many independent retail shops together with the major well-known retail chains. Shopping is simple and easy here! Lake Växjö, the pride of the city, with its lush green areas lies in the middle of the city offering lakeside cafes and fabulous recreational spaces. Växjö's award winning shopping centre, Grand Samarkand can be found just outside the city.
There are few Swedish cities that can match Växjö's rich night life and cultural experience. Try one of all the cosy cafés in the city center, listen to jazz with Hubert and friends at TAK bar or why not make a request with the DJ'sat Kafé de Luxe? These are just a few of Växjö's gems. Looking for more cultural experiences? You may want to know that Kronoberg/Blekinge regional theatre put up more than 600 shows last year. Smålands Museum, the Swedish glass museum, is situated in the Kulturparken.
Växjö also offers a large number of restaurants, the best-known being PM & Vänner which has won a number of national and international awards. Many restaurants use ecological, home grown products that are in season. We also have an annual Food Fair on the main square where over 100 local producers exhibit their products.

The Arena city – Arenastaden
Our unique Arenastaden located in central Växjö is rapidly becoming a centre for sporting excellence, training, leadership and venue for large-scale events. With four brand new venues for ice hockey, athletics, football and floorball and the current development of the High Performance Centre (HPC), Växjö is fast becoming a sporting centre. The Swedish Olympic Committee is involved in this work which includes the development of a new centre for summer sports. Furthermore Växjö is one of the host cities of the 2013 UEFA Women's Euro football championships.
The Linnaeus University
The Linnaeus University, with its 36 000 students, is a centre of research and further education in Växjö and Kalmar. The university has been in the forefront of national and international education and research for a long time. The Kamprad family and Inter IKEA's donation of SEK 950 million to a new foundation supporting research and development at the university is naturally a considerable boost to the region as a whole. Furthermore the establishment of the Information Engineering Centre (IEC) together with the Linnaeus University will help strengthen Växjö to become a prominent IT region. IEC members will have good opportunities to network with businesses, research institutes and gain access to research results.
